Quiet please, Im surfing.
I was watching Sky news yesterday and one of the features they were discussing was a story about the closure of local libraries throughout Britain. It seems that people from my home country no longer read books? Or if they do, they don’t like to borrow them from a library. This was interesting because the same day as the last rites were being performed on rural libraries in the UK, i visited for the first time a brand new, ultra modern Public library in Sunne.
I was a member of the previous library here. A lender who always forgot his return dates and probably contributed in part, to the building of the new one with all the late fees I paid. Normally though, it wasn’t paper books that I borrowed it was the cd books. They help to pass the time when driving and I have to admit, listening while a good story is being read to you does have a soothing effect after a hard day at work.
Nowadays successful libraries aren’t just places to rent books and are certainly not the stuffy, scary places of old where no one was allowed to speak above a whisper. The staffs are no longer comprised of old spinster ladies with their hair tied back in tight buns and wearing national health spectacles. Today’s libraries are communication centres, study halls and contain multiple forms of hi tech visual and listening aids. They offer all ages the chance to learn and have fun while they are doing it. If Sunne can finance and build such a place it beggars belief that the UK cant?
I have no idea why British libraries are closing down but I do have one idea which might help to make them a little more popular to visit. Open a Saffron and Vitlok restaurant next door; it’s definitely one way to bring in the crowds.

I´m glad you have paied your fees so we got a new library. Now and in the future we can read books from different sources so we have to look for further more interesting things to do here, just as you said.
